Ashtanga Yoga (Hatha Yoga of Mysore, India) — from the lineage of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, Shi K. Pattabhi Jois, R. Sharath Jois, and M S Viswanath (Masterji)

Through asana (physical postures), breath, and drishti (specific looking/gazing places), we begin the practice of yoga thus commencing purification of the physical body, and bringing concentration and stillness to the mind.

Yoga asana practice improves joint and vertebral/spinal health.  It helps free stuck energy and brings greater balance to our energy system increasing overall health of body and mind.  Benefits also include increased muscular strength, and freedom and flexibility in movement.  One definition of yoga is ‘union’.  This union includes a variety of elements — mind and body, breath and body, effort and ease, body and that which is beyond the body, etc.  Through yoga practice this union is experienced by the yoga practitioner.

Ashtanga yoga is for everyone — anyone can practice it be they young or old, physically fit or unfit, sick or healthy.  Ashtanga taught in the correct manner is approachable for all, and good teaching should be flexible and tailored to each student’s needs. The benefits of practicing ashtanga yoga can change your life for the better.
